In recent weeks, New South Wales has seen significant developments in traffic engineering, transport planning, and road safety. Here are three notable stories:

1. Trial of Glow-in-the-Dark Road Markings on Bulli Pass

The NSW government has initiated a six-month trial of photoluminescent road markings on Bulli Pass, south of Sydney. These markings absorb sunlight during the day and emit a glow at night, enhancing visibility in areas lacking street lighting. The trial aims to improve safety on this steep and winding section of road, which has experienced an increase in nighttime near misses, particularly involving large trucks and motorcycles. If successful, this environmentally friendly technology could be implemented in other high-risk locations across the state.

2. Community Concerns Over 'Death Trap' Intersection in Concord

Residents of Concord have labeled the intersection of Flavelle and Gipps streets as a "death trap" due to numerous serious accidents. Issues cited include inadequate signage, poor lighting, and high-speed limits, leading to fears for pedestrian safety. The local council plans to investigate these concerns, with proposed measures such as lowering the speed limit. However, since Gipps Street is a state road, collaboration with Transport for NSW is necessary. Transport for NSW has indicated it will assess the intersection to determine appropriate safety measures.

3. Expert Suggests Refresher Driving Lessons for Over-50s

A report from the University of New South Wales proposes mandatory driving lessons for Australians over the age of 50 to enhance road safety. The suggestion is based on findings that driving errors often stem from longstanding bad habits rather than age. Professor Kaarin Anstey emphasizes that regular refresher courses could serve as a preventive measure, improving driver performance and reducing accidents, rather than relying on punitive actions like license removal.
